റോമാസാമ്രാജ്യത്തെ വിറപ്പിച്ച പടത്തലവനാണ് ഹാനിബാൾ. ഹാമിൽക്കർ ബർക്കയുടെ മൂന്നു പുത്രന്മാരിൽ ഒന്നായാണ് ജനനം. ബി.സി 228ൽ ഹാമിൽക്കർ മരിച്ചു. അതോടെ പടയുടെ നായകസ്ഥാനം 26 വയസ്സുമാത്രമുള്ള ഹാനിബാളിനെ തേടിയെത്തി. ബി.സി. 218 മുതൽ 205 വരെ നീണ്ട് നിന്ന രണ്ടാം പ്യൂണിക് യുദ്ധത്തിൽ ഹാനിബാൾ റോമൻ സൈന്യത്തെ തകർത്തു തരിപ്പണമാക്കി. ബി.സി 205ൽ ഹാനിബാളിന് റോമൻ ആക്രമണത്തിൽ നിന്ന് കാർത്തേജ് പട്ടണത്തെ രക്ഷിക്കാനായി പിൻ വാങ്ങേണ്ടി വന്നു. ആ യുദ്ധത്തിൽ ഹാനിബാളിന് തോല്വി സംഭവിച്ചു. ബി.സി. 183ൽ തന്റെ 64ആം വയസ്സിൽ ഹാനിബാൾ അന്തരിച്ചു. അരനൂറ്റാണ്ട് കാലത്തെ ഭരണത്തിൽ അദ്ദേഹം റോമിനെ വിറപ്പിച്ചുവെങ്കിലും അന്തിമ ആക്രമണം നടത്താൻ വരുത്തിയ കാലതാമസമാണ് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പരാജയത്തിൽ ഭവിച്ചത്.
