1935 ഏപ്രിൽ 27 ന് [[ഏതൻസ്|ഏതൻസിൽ]] ജനിച്ചു. ഏതൻസ് സർവകലാശാലയിൽ നിയമ പഠനത്തിനു ചേർന്നു. പഠനം പൂർത്തിയാക്കാതെ നിർബദ്ധിത പട്ടാള സേവനത്തിനു പോവുകയാണുണ്ടായത്. അതിനുശേഷം പാരീസിൽ സാഹിത്യ-ചലച്ചിത്രപഠനത്തിനു ചേർന്നു. ഗ്രീസിൽ തിരിച്ചെത്തിയ തിയോ ഇടതുപക്ഷ ആശയങ്ങൾ പിന്തുണക്കുന്ന "ഡമോക്രാറ്റിക്ക് അലഗി" എന്ന പത്രത്തിൽ ചലച്ചിത്ര നിരൂപകനായി ജോലിനോക്കി. 1967-ൽ പത്രം നിരോധിക്കപ്പെട്ടതോടെ ചലച്ചിത്ര നിർമ്മാണത്തിലേക്ക് ശ്രദ്ധതിരിച്ചു. 1968-ൽ ആദ്യ ഹ്രസ്വചിത്രം "ദ ബ്രോഡ്കാസ്റ്റ്" സംവിധാനം ചെയ്തു. ആദ്യ മുഴുനീള ചലച്ചിത്രം "റീകൺസ്ട്രക്ഷൻ" 1970-ൽ പുറത്തിറങ്ങി. കവി, എഴുത്തുകാരൻ എന്നീ നിലകളിലും പ്രശസ്തനായ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ "അലക്‌സാണ്ടർ ദ ഗ്രേറ്റ്" എന്ന ചിത്രം 1980 ൽ വെനീസ് മേളയിൽ ഗോൾഡൺ ലയൺ പുരസ്കാരം നേടി. 1988-ൽ സംവിധാനം ചെയ്ത് "ലാന്റ്സ്ക്കേപ്പ് ഇൻ ദ മിസ്റ്റ്" വെനീസ് ചലച്ചിത്രമേളയിൽ സിൽവർ ലയൺ പുരസ്ക്കാരവും, ആ വർഷത്തെ ഏറ്റവും മികച്ച ചിത്രത്തിനുള്ള യൂറോപ്യൻ ഫിലിം പുരസ്ക്കാരവും നേടി. 1995-ൽ പുറത്തിറങ്ങിയ "യൂലിസസ് ഗേസ്" കാൻസ് അന്താരാഷ്ട ചലച്ചിത്രമേളയിൽ ഗ്രാന്റ് പ്രൈസിന് അർഹമായി.<ref name="cannes-1995.com">{{Cite web|url=http://www.festival-cannes.com/en/archives/ficheFilm/id/3371/year/1995.html |title=Festival de Cannes: Ulysses' Gaze |accessdate=2009-09-05|work=festival-cannes.com}}</ref> അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും മികച്ച സൃഷ്ടിയായി കരുതപ്പെടുന്ന "എന്റേണിറ്റി ആന്റ് ഏ ഡേ" 1998-ൽ പുറത്തിറങ്ങി. ചിത്രം ആ വർഷത്തെ കാൻസ് അന്താരാഷ്ട ചലച്ചിത്രമേളയിൽ [[ഗോൾഡൻ പാം പുരസ്കാരം]] നേടി.<ref name="festival-cannes.com">{{Cite web|url=http://www.cannes-1998.com/en/archives/ficheFilm/id/4920/year/1998.html |title=Festival de Cannes: Eternity and a Day |accessdate=2009-10-01|work=festival-cannes.com}}</ref> 2009 ലെ മുംബൈ ഫിലിം ഫെസ്റ്റിവലിൽ തിയോയെ ആദരിച്ചിരുന്നു.
