സൗത്ത് ആഫ്രിക്കൻ റാൻഡ്

ദക്ഷിണാഫ്രിക്കയുടെ കറൻസിയാണ് സൗത്ത് ആഫ്രിക്കൻ റാൻഡ് (ഇംഗ്ലീഷ്: South African rand)(ചിഹ്നം: R; കോഡ്: ZAR). ഒരു റാൻഡിനെ 100 സെന്റുകളായി (ചിഹ്നം: "c") വിഭജിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. റാൻഡിന്റെ ഐ.എസ്.ഒ 4217 കോഡ് ZAR എന്നാണ്. സൗത്ത് ആഫ്രിക്കൻ റാൻഡിന്റെ ഡച്ച് നാമമായ സ്സ്വിദ് ആഫ്രികാൻസെ റാൻഡ് ( Zuid-Afrikaanse Rand) എന്നതിന്റെ ചുരുക്കരൂപമാണ് ZAR. ദക്ഷിണാഫ്രിക്കയെ കൂടാതെ സ്വാസിലാൻഡ്, ലെസോത്തോ, നമീബിയ, എന്നീ രാജ്യങ്ങളിലും സൗത്ത് ആഫ്രിക്കൻ റാൻഡ് വിനിമയം ചെയ്യപ്പെടുന്നു.

ജൊഹനാസ്ബർഗ് നഗരം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന വിറ്റ്വാട്ടേർസ്റാൻഡ് എന്ന കുന്നിൻപ്രദേശത്തിന്റെ ഫേരിൽനിന്നുമാണ് റാൻഡ് എന്ന നാമം ഉദ്ഭവിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. ദക്ഷിണാഫ്രിക്കയിൽ ഏറെക്കുറെ സ്വർണ്ണ നിക്ഷേപം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്ന ഒരു പ്രദേശമായിരുന്നു ഇത്.

1961 ഫെബ്രുവരി 14നാണ് യൂണിയൻ ഓഫ് സൗത്ത് ആഫ്രിക്കയിൽ റാൻഡ് ആദ്യമായി അവതരിപ്പിച്ചത്. സൗത്ത് ആഫ്രിക്ക റിപ്പബ്ലിക് ആവുന്നതിനും മൂന്ന് മാസങ്ങൾക്ക് മുൻപായിരുന്നു ഇത്.[1] [2] മുൻപ് പ്രചാരത്തിലിരുന്ന സൗത്ത് ആഫ്രിക്കൻ പൗണ്ടിനു പകരമായാണ് റാൻഡ് കൊണ്ടുവന്നത്. 2 റാൻഡ് = 1 പൗണ്ട് = 10 ഷില്ലിങ് എന്ന നിരക്കിലായിരുന്നു റാൻഡ് അവതരിപ്പിച്ചത്.
