സുവർണ്ണ അരി

ബീറ്റാ-കരോട്ടിൻ നിർമ്മാണത്തിനായി നെൽച്ചെടിയിലെ സ്വാഭാവികമായ ഉത്പാദനപ്രക്രിയയിൽ(Bio synthetic pathway)ജനിതകമായി വ്യതിചലനം വരുത്തി സാദ്ധ്യമാക്കിയ ഭക്ഷ്യവസ്തുവാണ് സുവർണ്ണ അരി (Golden Rice). ഏഷ്യൻ രാജ്യങ്ങളിലെ പ്രധാന ഭക്ഷണധാന്യമായ അരിയിൽ ജീവകം എ യുടെ കുറവ് നികത്തുവാൻ ഇത് ഒരു പരിഹാരമാകുമെന്നു കരുതപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു. [1][2].ഫൈറ്റോയിൻ സിന്തേസ്, ലൈക്കോപിൻ ബീറ്റാ സൈക്ലേസ്,ഫൈറ്റോയിൻ ഡീസാറ്റുറേസ് എന്നീ മൂന്നു തരം രാസാഗ്നികളെ ഇതുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട് ഗവേഷകർ ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരുന്നു. അരിയുടെ സ്വർണ്ണവർണ്ണത്തിനു കാരണമാകുന്ന വർണ്ണവസ്തുവാണ് ലൈക്കോപിൻ.സുവർണ്ണ അരിയുടെ പോഷകമൂല്യം ആദ്യ പരീക്ഷണങ്ങളിൽ തീരെ കുറവായിരുന്നു. അതിനാൽ സിൻജെന്റ് കമ്പനിയിലെ ഗവേഷകർ 2005 ൽ ചോളത്തിൽ നിന്നുള്ള ഫൈറ്റോയിൻ സിന്തേസ് കൂട്ടിച്ചേർത്ത് ബീറ്റാ കരോട്ടിന്റെ വർദ്ധനവിനുശ്രമിച്ചിരുന്നു.ഗോൾഡൻ റൈസ് -2 എന്നാണ് ഇത് അറിയപ്പെട്ടത്[3]. ഈ ഇനത്തിൽ 23 ശതമാനം ബീറ്റാ കരോട്ടിന്റെ സാന്നിദ്ധ്യം ഗവേഷകർ അവകാശപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു[4].മറ്റ് നെല്ലിനങ്ങളുമായി കൂട്ടിച്ചേർത്ത് ഗുണമേന്മ വർദ്ധിപ്പിക്കാനും ശ്രമങ്ങൾ നടക്കുന്നു[5].
