Picornaviridae കുടുംബത്തിൽപ്പെട്ടതും പോളിയോമെലിറ്റസ് രോഗകാരിയുമായ വൈറസാണ് പോളിയോവൈറസ്[2].

ഒരു ആർ. എൻ. എ. ജനിതകപദാർത്ഥമാണ് പോളിയോ വൈറസിൽ ഉള്ളത്. ഇതിന്റെ ജനിതക ഘടനയിൽ ഏകദേശം 7500 ന്യൂക്ലിയോടൈഡുകൾ അടങ്ങിയിരിക്കുന്നു. മുപ്പത് നാനോമീറ്ററിൽ താഴെ മാത്രമാണ് ഇതിന്റെ വ്യാസം. വൈറസുകളിലെ ലളിത ജനിതക ഘടനയുള്ളവയായി പോളിയോവൈറസിനെ കണക്കാക്കുന്നു[3]. 1909 ൽ കാൾ ലാന്റ് സ്റ്റൈർ എർവിൻ പോപ്പർ എന്നിവരാണ് പോളിയോ വൈറസിനെ വേർതിരിച്ചെടുത്തത്.
മനുഷ്യരിൽ മാത്രമാണ് പോളിയോ വൈറസ് രോഗബാധയുണ്ടാക്കുന്നത് (പരീക്ഷണശാലകളിലെ ചിമ്പാൻസികളിലും രോഗബാധയുണ്ടായിട്ടുണ്ട്[4].)
അന്നപഥത്തിലൂടെയാണ് പോളിയോവൈറസ് പകരുന്നത് (Enterovirus)[5]. 95% വും ഇങ്ങനെ രോഗിയുടെ മലത്തിലൂടെ രോഗാണു ചുറ്റുപാടിലെത്തുകയും പകരുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. രോഗലക്ഷണങ്ങൾ കാണിക്കാതെ ഇതിന്റെ രോഗാണുക്കൾ മനുഷ്യരിൽ വളരെക്കാലംനിലനിൽക്കുന്നു. കേന്ദ്ര നാഡീവ്യവസ്ഥയെ ബാധിക്കുമ്പോൾ മോട്ടോർ ന്യൂറോണുകൾ നശിക്കുകയും താൽക്കാലികമോ സ്ഥിരമോ ആയ തളർവാതമുണ്ടാകുകയും ഇത് പോളിയോയ്ക്ക് കാരണമാകുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. അപൂർവ്വം സന്ദർഭങ്ങളിൽ, പോളിയോ ബാധ ശ്വസന തടസ്സമുണ്ടാക്കുകയും മരണകാരണമാകുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു[6] .
