ഡോറിസ് മേരി ആൻ കപ്പെൽഹോഫ്[2] 1922/1923 ഏപ്രിൽ 3 ന് സിൻസിനറ്റിയിൽ ഒരു വീട്ടമ്മയായ അൽമ സോഫിയയുടെയും ഒരു സംഗീതാദ്ധ്യാപകനായ വില്ല്യം ജോസഫ് കപ്പെൽഹോഫിൻറെയും മകളായി ജനിച്ചു.[3][4] അവരുടെ മുത്തശ്ശനും മുത്തശ്ശിയുമെല്ലാം ജർമ്മനിയിൽനിന്നുള്ള കുടിയേറ്റക്കാരായിരുന്നു.

1950കളിലും 60കളിലും ഹോളിവുഡിന്റെ താരറാണി ആയിരുന്ന ഡോറിസ്,പ്രശസ്ത സംവിധായകൻ ആൽഫ്രഡ് ഹിച്ച്‌കോക്കിന്റെ ദ് മാൻ ഹൂ ന്യൂ ടൂ മച്ച്,ദാറ്റ് ടച്ച് ഓഫ് മിങ്ക്എന്നീ രണ്ട് സിനിമകളിൽ അഭിനയിച്ചതോടെയാണ് ജനപ്രീതിയിലേക്കുയർന്നത്. കെ സെറ സെറ,വാട്ട് വിൽ ബി വിൽ ബി എന്ന പ്രശസ്ത ഗാനത്തിലെ സ്വരമാധുരി ഡോറിസിൻറ്റേതാണ്.
