കാതറിൻ ലീ ബേറ്റ്സ് (ജീവിതകാലം: ഓഗസ്റ്റ് 12, 1859 - മാർച്ച് 28, 1929) ഒരു അമേരിക്കൻ എഴുത്തുകാരി, കോളേജ് പ്രൊഫസർ, പണ്ഡിത, സാമൂഹ്യ പ്രവർത്തക എന്നീ നിലകളിൽ പ്രശസ്തയായ വനിതയായിരുന്നു. കവിതകൾ, യാത്രാ പുസ്‌തകങ്ങൾ, ഉപന്യാസങ്ങൾ, കുട്ടികളുടെ പുസ്‌തകങ്ങൾ, ചെറുപ്പക്കാർക്കുള്ള പുസ്‌തകങ്ങൾ[1][2] എന്നിവയും നിരവധി മുൻകാല എഴുത്തുകാരുടെ കൃതികളും പതിപ്പുകളും തയ്യാറാക്കി പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടെങ്കിലും അവർ ഇന്ന് "അമേരിക്ക ദി ബ്യൂട്ടിഫുൾ" എന്ന ദേശഭക്തിഗാനത്തിന്റെ രചയിതാവെന്ന പേരിലാണ് കൂടുതലായി ഓർമ്മിക്കപ്പെടുന്നത്. വെല്ലസ്ലി കോളേജ് ഫാക്കൽറ്റിയിൽ ആയിരിക്കുമ്പോൾ, ബേറ്റ്സ് നിരവധി യുവ കവികൾക്ക് (വെല്ലസ്ലിയിൽ അംഗമല്ലാത റോബർട്ട് ഫ്രോസ്റ്റിനെപ്പോലുള്ള ചിലർ ഉൾപ്പെടെ)[3] മാർഗ്ഗദർശകയാവുകയും കൂടാതെ അമേരിക്കൻ സാഹിത്യത്തെ കോളേജ് പഠനത്തിനുള്ള ഒരു മണ്‌ഡലമായി സ്ഥാപിക്കാൻ സഹായിക്കുകയും ഈ വിഭാഗത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് ഒരു ആദ്യകാല കോഴ്സ് സൃഷ്ടിച്ചതോടൊപ്പം ഈ വിഭാഗത്തിലേയ്ക്ക് ഒരു പാഠപുസ്തകംകൂടി എഴുതുകയും ചെയ്തു.[4]

മസാച്യുസെറ്റ്സിലെ ഫാൽമൗത്തിൽ പട്ടണത്തിലെ കോൺഗ്രിഗേഷണലിസ്റ്റ് ദേവാലയത്തിലെ പുരോഹിതൻ വില്യം ബേറ്റ്സ്, കൊർണേലിയ ഫ്രാൻസെസ് ലീ എന്നിവരുടെ മകളായി കാതറിൻ ബേറ്റ്സ് ജനിച്ചു. അവൾ ജനിച്ച് ഏതാനും ആഴ്ചകൾക്കുശേഷം പിതാവ് മരണമടഞ്ഞതിനാൽ പ്രധാനമായും അവളെ വളർത്തിയത് മാതാവും സാഹിത്യനിപുണയായ ഒരു അമ്മായിയുമായിരുന്നു. ഇരുവരും ഓൾ-വിമൻസ് മൌണ്ട് ഹോളിയോക്ക് സെമിനാരിയിൽ നിന്നും ബിരുദം നേടിയവരുമായിരുന്നു.[5][6] 1872 ൽ വെല്ലസ്ലി ഹൈസ്കൂളിലും (അക്കാലത്ത്, നീധാം ഹൈസ്കൂൾ എന്ന് വിളിക്കപ്പെട്ടു) 1876 വരെ ന്യൂട്ടൺ ഹൈസ്കൂളിലും വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം ചെയ്തു.[7] 1876 ൽ ഒരു വനിതാ കോളജായ വെല്ലസ്ലി കോളേജിൽ പ്രവേശനം നേടുകയും അവിടെനിന്ന് 1880 ൽ. ബി.എ. ബിരുദം കരസ്ഥമാക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.[8] 1880–81 ൽ നാറ്റിക് ഹൈസ്കൂളിലും 1881 മുതൽ 1885 വരെ ഡാന ഹാൾ സ്കൂളിലും അവർ പഠിപ്പിച്ചു.

1889-ൽ ബേറ്റ്സിന്റെ ചെറുപ്പക്കാർക്കുള്ള നോവലായ റോസ് ആൻഡ് തോൺ കോൺഗ്രിഗേഷണൽ സൺഡേ സ്കൂളിലും പബ്ലിഷിംഗ് സൊസൈറ്റിയലുംനിന്ന് സമ്മാനം നേടി.[9] സാമൂഹ്യ പരിഷ്കരണത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് വായനക്കാരെ പഠിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിന് ഇതിലെ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളായി ദരിദ്രരും തൊഴിലാളിവർഗ സ്ത്രീകളെയും ഉൾപ്പെടുത്തിയിരുന്നു.[10][11] സൺ‌ഷൈൻ ആന്റ് അദർ വേഴ്സസ് ഫോർ ചിൽഡ്രൻ (1889) എന്ന കവിതാസമാഹാരത്തിൽ നിന്നുള്ള "ഗുഡി സാന്താക്ലോസ് ഓൺ എ സ്ലീ റൈഡ്" എന്ന കവിതയിലെ മിസിസ് ക്ലോസിന്റെ ആശയം അവർ ജനപ്രിയമാക്കി. ക്രിസ്മസ് രാവിന്റെ മുഖ്യ സംഘാടകരിലൊരാളാണ് കവിതയിൽ മിസ്സിസ് ക്ലോസ് എന്ന കഥാപാത്രം.[12]

ആഭ്യന്തരയുദ്ധത്തിനുശേഷം[13] സ്ത്രീകൾക്ക് ലഭ്യമായ പുതിയ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ അവസരങ്ങൾ മുതലെടുത്തുകൊണ്ട് റോസ് ആന്റ് തോൺ[14] എന്ന കൃതിയിലൂടെ തനിക്കു ലഭിച്ച സമ്മാന തുക ഇംഗ്ലണ്ട് സന്ദർശിക്കുന്നതിനും 1890–91 ൽ ഓക്സ്ഫോർഡ് സർവകലാശാലയിൽ പഠിക്കുന്നതിനും ഉപയോഗിച്ചു.[15] 1891-ൽ അവൾ വെല്ലസ്ലിയിലേക്ക് ഒരു അസോസിയേറ്റ് പ്രൊഫസറായി മടങ്ങിയെത്തുകയും അവിടെനിന്ന് എം.എ നേടിക്കൊണ്ട്, ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് സാഹിത്യത്തിന്റെ മുഴുവൻ സമയ പ്രൊഫസറായി സ്ഥാനക്കയറ്റം നേടുകയും ചെയ്തു.[16] സ്പാനിഷ്-അമേരിക്കൻ യുദ്ധത്തിന്റെ അവസാനത്തോടടുത്ത്, ന്യൂയോർക്ക് ടൈംസിന്റെ ഒരു യുദ്ധകാര്യ ലേഖികയായി അവർ ജോലി ചെയ്യുകയും സ്പെയിൻകാരെക്കുറിച്ച് വ്യാപകമായി പ്രചരിക്കുന്ന ഒരു മോശം ധാരണയെ ലഘൂകരിക്കാൻ അവർ പരിശ്രമിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.[17] അറ്റ്ലാന്റിക് മാസിക, ദി കോൻഗ്രെഗേഷണലിസ്റ്റ്, ബോസ്റ്റൺ ഈവനിംഗ് ട്രാൻസ്ക്രിപ്റ്റ്, ക്രിസ്ത്യൻ സെഞ്ച്വറി, കണ്ടമ്പററി വേർസ്, ലിപ്പിൻകോട്ട്സ്, ദി ഡെലിനീറ്റർ എന്നിവയുൾപ്പെടെയുള്ള ആനുകാലികങ്ങളിൽ (ചിലപ്പോൾ ജെയിംസ് ലിങ്കൺ എന്ന തൂലികാനാമത്തിൽ) സ്ഥിരമായി അവർ ലേഖനങ്ങളെഴുതി നൽകിയിരുന്നു.[18]
