ലോകത്തിലെ രണ്ടാമത്തെ ഉയരം കൂടിയ കൊടുമുടിയായ കെ2 (K2) ഉൾപ്പെടെ അറുപതിൽ കൂടുതൽ കൊടുമുടികൾ കാറക്കോറത്തിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നുണ്ട്. 8611 മീറ്റർ (28,251 അടി) ഉയരമുള്ള കെ2 ന് ഏവറെസ്റ്റിനേക്കാൾ 237 മീറ്റർ ഉയരക്കുറവ് മാത്രമാണുള്ളത്. ഏകദേശം 500 കി.മീറ്റർ (300 മൈൽ) നീളമുണ്ട് ഈ പർവ്വതനിരയ്ക്ക്. ധ്രുവ പ്രദേശത്തെ കൂടാതെ വലിയ അളവിൽ മഞ്ഞ് മൂടി കിടക്കുന്ന പ്രദേശങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നാണിത്. 70 കി.മീ നീളമുള്ള സിയാച്ചിൻ ഹിമപാളിയും 63 കി.മീ നീളമുള്ള ബയാഫൊ ഹിമപാളിയും ധ്രുവപ്രദേശത്തിന്‌ പുറത്ത് ഏറ്റവും നീളമുള്ള രണ്ടാമത്തേയും മൂന്നാമത്തേയും ഹിമപാളികളാണ്‌.[1]

തുർക്കി ഭാഷയിൽ കരിങ്കല്ല് (black rubble) എന്നാണ് കാരക്കോറം എന്ന വാക്കിന്റെ അർത്ഥം[2].
