ഒരു വിവരം മറച്ചുവയ്ക്കാനോ നീക്കം ചെയ്യാനോ ശ്രമിക്കുന്നതുമൂലം അക്കാര്യം പരക്കെ അറിയപ്പെടുക എന്ന ഉദ്ദേശിക്കാത്ത ഫലമുണ്ടാകുന്നതിനെയാണ് സ്ട്രൈസാൻഡ് പ്രഭാവം എന്നുവിളിക്കുന്നത്. സാധാരണഗതിയിൽ ഇന്റർനെറ്റിലൂടെയാണ് ഈ വിവരം പരക്കുന്നത്. ഒരു കാര്യം നിരോധിക്കുകയോ സെൻസർ ചെയ്യുകയോ ചെയ്യുന്നത് അതിനോടുള്ള താല്പര്യം കൂട്ടും എന്നതു തന്നെയാണ് ഈ പ്രഭാവത്തിന്റെ അടിസ്ഥാനം.
വെബ്‌സൈറ്റുകൾ തടയാനുള്ള ശ്രമങ്ങൾ ആ വെബ് സൈറ്റുകളിലെ വിവരങ്ങൾ കൂടുതൽ പേരിലെത്താൻ കാരണമാകുന്ന സംഭവ‌ങ്ങൾ സാധാരണയായി ഉണ്ടാകാറുണ്ട്. ഇതെപ്പറ്റി വീഡിയോകളും മറ്റുമുണ്ടാവുക‌യും മിറർ സൈറ്റുകളിൽ വിവരങ്ങൾ പ്രദർശിപ്പിക്കപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്യപ്പെടുന്നത് പതിവാണ്. [1] [2][3]

അമേരിക്കൻ നടിയും പാട്ടുകാരിയും എഴുത്തുകാരിയും സിനിമാനിർമ്മാതാവും സംവിധായകയുമായി ശോഭിച്ച ബാർബറ സ്ട്രൈസാൻഡ് 2003-ൽ തന്റെ വീടിന്റെ ഫോട്ടോകൾ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിക്കുന്നത് തടയാൻ ശ്രമിച്ചത് അവ കൂടുതൽ പടരാൻ കാരണമായി എന്നതാണ് ഈ പേരുണ്ടാകാൻ കാരണമായ സംഭവം. വിമാനത്തിൽ നിന്നെടുത്ത സ്ട്രൈസാൻഡിന്റെ വീടിന്റെ ചിത്രം കാലിഫോർണിയൻ ബീച്ചിന്റെ പൊതുജനങ്ങൾക്ക് ലഭ്യമായ 12,000 ചിത്രങ്ങളുൾപ്പെട്ട ഒരു സഞ്ചികയുടെ ഭാഗമായി പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിക്കപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു. പ്രസാധകരായ കെന്നത്ത് ആഡെൽമാൻ, പിക്റ്റോപ്പിയ.കോം എന്നിവർക്കെതിരേ സ്വകാര്യതയ്ക്ക് ഭംഗം വരുത്തിയെന്നാരോപിച്ച് അഞ്ചുകോടി ഡോളർ നഷ്ടപരിഹാരം ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടുകൊണ്ട് സ്ട്രൈസാൻഡ് കേസുകൊടുത്തുവെങ്കിലും പരാജയപ്പെട്ടു.[2][4][5] ആഡെൽമാൻ ഈ വീടിനോടു ചേർന്നുള്ള ബീച്ചിന്റെ ചിത്രമെടുത്തത് കരയെ കടലെടുക്കുന്നത് കാണിക്കുവാനായിരുന്നു. ഇത് ഭരണകൂടം അനുവദിച്ചതും ഭരണകൂടം ചെലവുചെയ്ത് നടപ്പാക്കിയതുമായ കാലിഫോർണിയ കോസ്റ്റൽ റിക്കോർഡ്സ് പ്രോജക്റ്റിന്റെ ഭാഗമായിരുന്നു.[6][7] സ്ട്രൈസാൻഡ് കേസുകൊടുക്കുന്നതിനു മുൻപ് "ഇമേജ് 3850" എന്ന ചിത്രം ആറു തവണയേ ഡൗൺലോഡ് ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നുള്ളൂ. ഇതിൽ രണ്ടെണ്ണം സ്ട്രൈസാൻഡിന്റെ അഭിഭാഷകരായിരുന്നു നടത്തിയത്.[8] കേസുകൊടുത്തത് പൊതുജനത്തിന് ഇതെപ്പറ്റി താല്പര്യമുണ്ടാക്കുകയും അടുത്ത മാസം 420,000 പേർ ഈ സൈറ്റ് കാണാൻ ഇടയാക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.[9]
