സയൻസ് കഥകളുടെ ഉപവിഭാഗമായ സൈബർപങ്കിന്റെ(cyberpunck) പ്രണേതാവായ ഒരു അമേരിക്കൻ-കനേഡിയൻ എഴുത്തുകാരനാണ്‌ വില്യം ഫോർഡ് ഗിബ്‌സൺ.(ജനനം:മാർച്ച് 17, 1948) . ബേണിംഗ് ക്രോം എന്ന ചേറുകഥയിലൂടെ "സൈബർസ്പേസ്"(cyberspace) എന്ന പദം ആദ്യമായി ഉപയോഗിച്ചത് വില്യം ഗിബ്‌സൺ ആണ്‌ . പിന്നീട് 1984 ൽ എഴുതിയ "ന്യൂറോമാൻസർ"(Neuromancer) എന്ന നോവലിലൂടെ ഈ വാക്ക് കൂടുതൽ പ്രചാരം നേടി.1990 കളിൽ ഇന്റർനെറ്റ് വ്യാപകമാകുന്നതിന്‌ മുമ്പ് തന്നെ ഇൻഫർമേഷൻ യുഗത്തിന്റെ(information age) ഒരു സാങ്കല്പിക ലോകം അദ്ദേഹം ദർശിച്ചു. റിയാലിറ്റി ടെലിവിഷന്റെ ഉദയം പ്രവചിച്ചതിലൂടെയും വീഡിയോ ഗൈം, വെബ് തുടങ്ങിയ പ്രതീതി സാഹചര്യങ്ങളുടെ(virtual environments) ദ്രുതഗതിയിലുള്ള വളർച്ചയ്ക്ക് നിദാനമായ സാങ്കല്പിക അടിത്തറ സ്ഥാപിച്ചതിലൂടെയും ഗിബ്‌സൺ പ്രസിദ്ധനായി. "കഴിഞ്ഞ രണ്ട് ദശകത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും പ്രമുഖനായ നോവലിസ്റ്റ്" എന്നാണ്‌ ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് പത്രമായ ദ ഗാർഡിയൻ 1999 ൽ ഗിബ്‌സനെ വിശേഷിപ്പിച്ചത്. ഇരുപതിലധികം ചെറുകഥകളും നിരൂപക പ്രശംസ നേടിയ ഒമ്പത് നോവലുകളും(ഒരെണ്ണം മറ്റൊരാളുമായി ചേർന്നെഴുതിയത്) നിരവധി ലേഖനങ്ങളും അദ്ദേഹം ഇതുവരെയായി എഴുതി. സംഗീതജ്ഞർ,ചലച്ചിത്രകാരന്മാർ,മറ്റുകലാകാരന്മാർ എന്നിവരുമായും അദ്ദേഹം പ്രവർത്തിച്ചു. ശാസ്ത്രകഥകാരന്മാരിലും ,സാങ്കേതികത,അക്കാദമിക രംഗം, സൈബർസംസ്കാരം എന്നിവയിലും ഗിബ്‌സന്റെ ചിന്താ സ്വാധീനം പ്രകടമാണ്‌.
