ന്യൂയോർക്കിലെ നെസ്കോൺസെറ്റിലെ ലോങ്ങ് ഐലൻഡിൽ ആണ് ജോഡി ജനിച്ചത്.[3] 13 വയസ്സുള്ളപ്പോൾ അവരുടെ കുടുംബം ന്യൂ ഹാംപ്ഷയറിലേക്ക് താമസം മാറി. തന്റെ കുടുംബത്തെ "പ്രായോഗികരല്ലാത്ത യഹൂദർ" എന്നാണ് അവർ വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്.[4] ജോഡി അഞ്ചു വയസിൽ "ദ ലോബ്സ്റ്റർ വിച്ച് മിസ്അണ്ടർസ്റ്റുഡ്" എന്ന ആദ്യ കഥ എഴുതി. അധ്യാപകരായ അമ്മയുടെയും മുത്തശ്ശിയുടെയും സ്വാധീനം എഴുത്തുകാരിയാകുന്നതിൽ വളരെ പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ടതായിരുന്നുവെന്ന് അവർ വിലയിരുത്തുന്നു.[3].
