ഗിംപ്
ഡിജിറ്റൽ ഗ്രാഫിക്കുകളും, ഫോട്ടോഗ്രാഫുകളും എഡിറ്റ് ചെയ്യുന്നതിനുപയോഗിക്കുന്ന ഒരു റാസ്റ്റർ ഗ്രാഫിക്സ് എഡിറ്റർ ആണ് ഗിംപ് (GIMP) (GNU Image Manipulation Program മുൻപ് General Image manipulation Program). ഒരു സ്വതന്ത്ര സോഫ്റ്റ്‌വെയർ ആയ ഇത് പ്രധാനമായും ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത് ഗ്രാഫിക്കുകളും മുദ്രകളും നിർമ്മിക്കുന്നതിനും, ഫോട്ടോകളുടെ വലിപ്പം നിയന്ത്രിക്കുന്നതിനും, ക്രോപ്പ് ചെയ്യുന്നതിനും, നിറങ്ങൾ മാറ്റുന്നതിനും, നിരവധി ചിത്രങ്ങൾ ഒന്നിക്കുന്നതിനും, ചിത്രങ്ങളിലെ ആവശ്യമില്ലാത്ത ഭാഗങ്ങൾ നീക്കുന്നതിനും, ചിത്രങ്ങൾ സേവ് ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്ന ഫോർമാറ്റ് മാറ്റുന്നതിനുമാണ്‌.[4].

ജനറൽ ഇമേജ് മാനിപ്പുലേഷൻ പ്രോഗ്രാം എന്ന പേരിൽ (General Image Manipulation Program) 1995ൽ ആണ് ഇതിന്റെ വികസിപ്പികൽ ആരംഭിച്ചത്. കാലിവോർണിയ സർവ്വകലാശാലയിലെ സ്പെൻസർ കിമ്പാൾ (Spencer Kimball) പീറ്റർ മാറ്റിസ് (Peter Mattis) എന്നീ വിദ്യാർത്ഥികൾ എക്‌സ്‌പെരിമെന്റൽ കമ്പ്യൂട്ടിംഗ് സൗകര്യത്തിനായി കാലിഫോർണിയ സർവകലാശാല, ബെർക്ക്‌ലിയിൽ വെച്ചാണ് തങ്ങളുടെ ഒരു സെമസ്റ്റർ നീളുന്ന ക്ലാസ്സ് പ്രൊജക്റ്റായാണ് ഇതിന് തുടക്കം കുറിച്ചത്.[5] 1996ലാണ് ഗിംപ് ആദ്യമായി പൊതുസഞ്ചയത്തിൽ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചത്. 1997ൽ ഇത് ഗ്നൂ പദ്ധതിയുടെ ഭാഗമായി. 1994-ലെ പൾപ്പ് ഫിക്ഷൻ ഫിലിമിൽ നിന്നുള്ള "ദി ജിംപ്" എന്നതിന്റെ സൂചനയായി -IMP-യിൽ G എന്ന അക്ഷരം ചേർത്താണ് ചുരുക്കപ്പേര് ആദ്യം ഉപയോഗിച്ചത്.[6]
1996-ൽ ഗിംപ് (0.54) ന്റെ പ്രാരംഭ സോഫ്റ്റവെയർ പൊതുജനങ്ങൾക്ക് ലഭ്യമായി തുടങ്ങി.[7][8]

It took us a little while to come up with the name. We knew we wanted an image manipulation program like Photoshop, but the name IMP sounded wrong. We also tossed around XIMP (X Image Manipulation Program) following the rule of when in doubt prefix an X for X11 based programs. At the time, Pulp Fiction was the hot movie and a single word popped into my mind while we were tossing out name ideas. It only took a few more minutes to determine what the 'G' stood for.
